A recent trend I’d like to share is that of companies located in the Narasapura-Hoskote industrial corridor looking for branch office space in KR Puram.

This surge in demand for a branch office is probably fueled by the huge investments being made in Narasapura by Indian automotive and aerospace companies, and the arrival of some of the world’s largest companies.

For example, Apple contractor Wistron, a Taiwan-based tech giant, has acquired 43 acres of land in Narasapura, and plans to invest Rs. 1,947 crore in Bengaluru for manufacturing mobile phones, IoT devices and biotech equipment. They will attract a huge supply chain, many of whom will be looking for a branch office to house their own leadership and back office teams.

Then there’s Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, which has its largest two-wheeler manufacturing plant in the country in Narasapura, with a capacity to produce 24 lakh two-wheelers. Honda has invested over Rs. 5,400 crore in this plant, with a massive economic impact that includes a projected 22,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The couples and families who come to Evoma to book their wedding hall ask us questions about all this and more. But the one thing that is the most important to everyone is this – What is the budget going to be for all this?

In this article, we attempt to share with you the most recent wedding budget trends and statistics, so you know how big the wedding industry is in India, how much is being spent, and what is the average spend. This can help you set your own wedding budget, and plan for marriages in the near future.

1. Number of weddings taking place in India.

There may be fewer weddings in some months due to a lack of auspicious dates. The most auspicious dates are found between late October and December, so this is commonly known as the Indian wedding season. All told, there are about 30,000 weddings taking place1 per day, on average, in India. That works out to over 9 lakh weddings per month, and more than 10 million per year.

2. Estimated budget and spending at Indian weddings.

On average, the Indian family (on the girl’s side) will spend 20% of their wealth, at that time, for a wedding, that takes place in the average Indian family once in 20 years. The total value of the Indian wedding industry is estimated2 to be in excess of $50 billion, second only to the U.S. wedding industry ($70 billion).

Estimated spending per wedding may typically vary from Rs. 5-10 lakh at the lower end, and up to Rs. 5 crore for high-end luxury arrangements, depending on the size (people attending), location, bridal gold jewelry and clothing budget, food and drinks menu, and most importantly – the number of days (1 to 5 days).

3. Breakup of Indian wedding budget costs.

The three big-ticket items at an Indian wedding are the wedding hall or kalyana mandap where you hold the marriage ceremony and then the reception, then the catering costs (per plate x number of guests), and the bridal gold and jewelry.

Wedding Hall: Daily rental of between Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 5 lakh, depending on type (mandapa, hotel, convention center, outdoor ground, etc.) and location within city.

Catering: Per plate cost of between Rs. 350 to Rs. 2,000 (about Rs. 200 difference for veg and non-veg). A dedicated kalyana mandapa where they have a cooking crew available only for weddings will cost between Rs. 350-550 at the lower end, while a luxury 5-star hotel will charge you Rs. 1800-2000. Evoma, for the record, is a 4-star luxury hotel in Bangalore where the typical per plate rate for wedding catering is Rs. 499.

Bridal gold and jewelry: More than half of the 900 tons of gold purchased annually in India is bought3 during the wedding season, with an average of 30-40 grams per wedding. As of now, the cost per gram is Rs. 3,237 (24 carat, 99.99% pure). This means the cost of gold alone works out to between Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 1.3 lakh, on average. This is not including the making charges, and all the existing gold that the girl and her family will have collected for 20 years to ensure that there is enough gold jewelry at the time of marriage.

Apart from this, you have wedding day clothes and apparel, event planning costs (wedding planner), hotel accommodation, decorations, stage, lighting, videographer, gifts for guests, floral arrangements and lighting, transportation, etc.

All inclusive cost for a typical 1-day wedding in India will work out to Rs. 5-10 lakh in a 2nd tier city, and between 25-50 lakhs in a metropolitan city.

In the previous post, we looked at how to conduct new employee induction programs. In this post, I want to take a step back and look at all the ways in which employers can prepare to make a round of interviews a big success.

Our own recruitment and hiring process at Evoma requires interviews almost every day to fill the hundreds of hotel jobs for our business hotel, and the operations teams at our four business centers in Bangalore.

This interview preparation checklist for employers is based on our own experience, and handling all the interview-related requests that our member businesses ask for.

1. Select the right location and venue for the interview.

The location where you conduct your interviews says a lot about what kind of candidates will show up. A small or medium business that operates out of a factory may find it hard to attract top-tier candidates from metro cities to an industrial area in another city.

Ideally, the location should be in the city from where you want to hire talent. The venue should be easy accessible to all the candidates, close to major transportation hubs. For example, Evoma OMR is ideally located on the highway, just 20 minutes from Whitefield, Byappanahalli Metro, Indiranagar and other areas in East Bangalore that both employers and employees will find convenient.

The driveway, outdoor pool and garden, luxury hotel atmosphere and professional staff and facilities also make a good first impression, which is critical for hiring the best candidates out of those who show up.

2. Arrange for free shuttles or reimbursement for transportation to all the invited candidates.

Another thing that attracts the top candidates suitable for the open position is free transportation. Someone who is busy at their current job, and doesn’t have a lot of free time, will not want to spend their own money to come for the interview.

But they’ll be motivated to make the effort if you can provide reimbursement for expenses, or at least provide a shuttle to pick up and drop off candidates to and from the interview location to the nearest metro station.

3. Arrange for waiting space large enough for all the invited candidates.

The last thing an interview candidate wants to do is come to the venue and find out it’s already crowded and there’s no room to sit down. In addition to the board room or meeting room where you are conducting interviews, you must have access to a large waiting room or reception that can seat all your candidates who have down come for the interview.

4. Make sure you have reception staff to field calls and talk to candidates who show up.

Interview candidates typically have a lot of doubts and questions after they arrive at the venue. They want to let you know they have arrived, and what should they do next? More questions that people coming for an interview might ask are listed below.

5. Arrange for beverages, snacks and meals for candidates while they wait.

After the first 10-15 minutes of waiting, an interview candidate will start feeling restless. If you want them to stay alert and eager to do well, it’s important to keep them well fed. Provide tea, coffee, cold drinks and refreshments. If the wait time extends beyond 12:00 noon, then you must also arrange for lunch for everyone who is still waiting.

6. Ensure there are restrooms within the premises for candidates.

The one thing that is a must-have is at least one restroom each for male and female candidates. It’s a necessity to have on within the premises, on the same floor if possible. It also makes a big impression on the candidates, who need to use the restroom and freshen up while waiting.

7. Make use of a queue management system to call candidates just in time for the interview.

On top of all the aforementioned interview tips for employers, you might also want to consider making use of a queue management system (such as VirtuaQ) to allow your candidates to schedule their interview appointment. The system sends them an SMS token that gives them a number and a time at which they should come.

If there are any changes, delay or preponement, then the QMS will send out another notification via SMS to let the candidate know of the change in time. Either way, the point is that they don’t have to come and wait all day long. A candidate may come just in time, wait for 5-10 min before the interview, and leave as soon as it’s done.

It’s less of an ordeal for scared candidates. For the employer, it reduces the cost of handling a room full of interview candidates. As an event venue that benefits from such waits, we don’t have to share such secrets.

3. Toyota Kirloskar supply chain in Bangalore.

The Toyota Kirloskar plant in Bidadi and associated Toyota facilities and suppliers take up a sizeable part of the Bidadi Industrial Area’s automotive cluster on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Here’s a map that shows them (data from Toyota Kirloskar Suppliers Association).

As you can see from the map above, the biggest cluster is around Toyota Kirloskar’s Bidadi plant itself. But there are some more in the Peenya industrial area, and some more in the Mahadevpura-Whitefield cluster.

This last set of suppliers in the Toyota Kirloskar supply chain is what is most interesting, because they’re part of the Whitefield auto and aeronautical/aerospace clusters. Their operations, talent and component / parts / material requirements are close enough that the automotive and aeronautical industries come together in joint clusters serving both industries.
